The Stillwater General Store, located in Stillwater, New Jersey, boasts a rich history that dates back to the 19th century. Established in 1876 by Civil War veteran George D. Garris and his father, John, the store was funded by George's mustering-out pay from his service in the Union Army. For several generations, the Garris family managed the store, with ownership passing to George's son and later to his grandchildren, Harold and Deloris. In 1981, the store transitioned to a new owner but continued to function as a vital community hub. Over the years, the Stillwater General Store has adapted to the changing needs of the community, providing a wide range of goods, from groceries to hardware. It has also served as a social gathering place, where locals come together to connect and share news. Recent renovations have preserved the store’s historic charm while modernizing its facilities, ensuring that it remains a cherished institution in Stillwater, offering both a glimpse into the past and essential services to the community.
